Four formats, chosen by who is in the room and what they are being asked to do

Every format is taught live on the NFPA 70E 2027 edition and every attendee leaves with documented completion naming the edition, the date, the duration and the content covered. Group and private delivery are quoted per engagement — fixed scope, quoted up front.

2-Day Qualified Electrical Worker

Who it is for

Electricians, technicians and supervisors who open enclosures, operate disconnects, rack breakers, test and troubleshoot — and those who authorise that work. The default where the employer needs a defensible qualified-person determination.

What it covers

The 2027 edition end to end: Article 105 responsibilities; Article 110 general requirements, including the electrical safety program and training; Article 120 establishing an electrically safe work condition; Article 130 work involving electrical hazards. Risk assessment, hierarchy of risk control, boundaries, PPE, job briefings, permits, and the restructured Chapter 3 including the new direct current article. Hands-on with your own equipment when onsite.

Who it is for

Qualified electrical workers at sites with an established program and current procedures, where the crew has prior 70E training and the requirement is initial or periodic qualified-person training rather than a first exposure to the standard.

What it covers

Shock and arc flash hazards and risk assessment; hierarchy of risk control; establishing and maintaining an electrically safe work condition; approach and arc flash boundaries; PPE selection, inspection and care; job briefings; energised work permits; and what changed in the 2027 edition, including the Chapter 3 restructure and direct current.

Workers already on the roster, retrained on cycle or because a trigger fired — a new edition, a changed procedure, new equipment, a new work method, or an observed deficiency.

What it covers

A condensed pass through risk assessment, the safe work condition sequence, boundaries and PPE, plus a focused block on what changed for this crew: 2027 edition changes touching their equipment, and revisions to their own procedures.

Electrical Safety Awareness
Half day
Who it is for

Non-qualified staff in or passing through areas where electrical hazards exist: operators, mechanical maintenance, facilities, engineering, EHS, contractor escorts and supervisors. It does not make anyone a qualified person — which is why it is run separately.

What it covers

Recognising electrical hazards and the equipment presenting them; why boundaries exist; what an arc flash label is saying; what they must not do, including opening enclosures and operating disconnects; responding to damaged equipment; and the affected-employee side of hazardous energy control under 29 CFR 1910.147.

Delivery

Onsite and live virtual — and an honest account of what each one cannot do

Both modes are taught live by the same instructor, to the same content, on the same edition. Neither is pre-recorded. The difference is what the room gives you, and most clients end up using both for different populations.

Onsite at your facility
What it is good for

Teaching on your own equipment, labels and procedures. The class can walk to the switchgear, read the actual label, look at the actual disconnect and argue about the actual isolation points. PPE can be handled, inspected and fitted. Crews raise site-specific disagreements that never surface on a screen — usually the most valuable forty minutes of the day, because that is how we learn the written procedure does not match the practice.

What it cannot do

It cannot cover a distributed workforce economically. It needs a room, a date everyone can make, and shift coverage — which for a continuous plant means repeating the class or pulling people off the floor. Travel and scheduling make it slower to arrange.

Live virtual
What it is good for

Multi-site and distributed crews, shift coverage without travel, and moving a large population onto a new edition quickly. It is a live instructor with live question-and-answer, not a recording — attendance, participation and the knowledge check are observed in real time, which is what makes the record worth something.

What it cannot do

It cannot put hands on your equipment or your PPE. Nobody inspects a glove, dons a suit, walks a lineup or points at a real label. Where a qualified-person determination depends on demonstrated ability on specific equipment, the employer still has to evidence that separately — typically a supervised field demonstration. We say so rather than letting a completion certificate imply more than it should.

The consulting difference

Attendance is not evidence of qualification

NFPA 70E defines the qualified person in Article 100 and sets training requirements in 110.4 — both written around demonstrated ability on specific equipment and work methods. A sign-in sheet establishes only that a person was in a room. Auditors, insurers and investigators ask four questions, and most employers can answer the first.

What training record exists, and what does it actually say?

A defensible record names the person, the date, the duration, the edition of the standard taught, the content covered, the method of evaluation and the instructor. “70E training, 3/14” is not a record; it is a memory aid.

Qualified for which tasks, on which equipment?

Qualification is task and equipment specific. Operating a disconnect is not racking a breaker on a medium-voltage lineup, and neither is working on a battery string or a PV array. A blanket “qualified” label across a whole trade is the finding, not the defence.

What triggers retraining, and did you act on it?

Retraining is not only a calendar interval. New or changed procedures, new equipment or work methods, a new edition, an observed deficiency, or a period away from the work all reset the question. Write the triggers into the program, then keep the evidence that each was actioned when it fired.

Can you produce the qualified-person roster today?

A controlled document with a named owner and a review cycle, listing who is qualified for what, on which equipment classes, determined by whom and when — covering contractor personnel as well as employees. This is the document most employers cannot produce.

Organisational impact

Doing this properly changes headcount planning, not just paperwork. Employers who build a task-level roster consistently find the qualified population is smaller than assumed — which surfaces during the outage if it has not surfaced beforehand. It also changes procurement: the cheapest class produces the weakest record, and the record is the only part of the class that survives to the audit.

DC and Photovoltaic Training

A general 70E class does not evidence PV training. The 2027 edition made that explicit.

Chapter 3 of the 2027 edition has been restructured, and Article 380 covers safety-related work practices for photovoltaic systems. Within it, 380.3 carries an electrical safety training requirement of its own: it applies training obligations to employees exposed to electrical hazards on or near PV arrays, interconnected PV equipment and collection systems, and states what qualified-person training must cover — the operating characteristics of the modules and equipment, recognising the continuously energised nature of PV panels, performing a risk assessment for energised work, developing and following procedures that minimise exposure, and using control measures including PPE.

Read that against a record for a standard qualified electrical worker class. The record shows general electrical safety work practices. It does not show the article-level PV content, and it does not show a qualified-person determination for PV work. If your people are on a roof, in a combiner yard or in a battery room, that is a specific documentary gap with a specific fix.

Batteries are the other half of this

Article 360 covers safety-related requirements for batteries, and its language matters: batteries get a lower risk work condition, not an electrically safe work condition, because a battery cannot be de-energised. Lockout thinking does not transfer. Crews trained only on AC isolation apply a mental model that does not fit the equipment, and procedures have to be written for battery work specifically. We teach it as a distinct block for sites with storage, UPS plant or a battery room.

Consulting-led delivery

We train people on the program and procedures we wrote

Most 70E classes teach the standard in the abstract and leave the crew to reconcile it with whatever their employer’s documents say. Where we have written those documents, there is nothing to reconcile.

The class matches the paperwork

Attendees are taught the isolation sequence from their own lockout procedure, the permit form they will actually fill in, and the boundaries from their own incident energy study. Nothing they learn conflicts with what the binder says — the most common reason a procedure is quietly ignored.

The class is a document review

Crews argue with procedures in a classroom in a way they never do in an audit interview. Every class produces a short list of places where the written document does not survive contact with the equipment. Those come back to you as findings.

One accountable party

The person who audited the site, wrote the program and drafted the procedures is the person standing in front of the crew. There is no handoff between a consulting firm and a training vendor, and no gap between them for a requirement to fall through. See the procedures practice →
