Arc Flash PPE: How to Select the Right Protective Equipment

Arc flash personal protective equipment (PPE) is the last line of defense against the intense heat of an electrical arc — but NFPA 70E treats it as exactly that: a last resort, not the first answer. This guide explains what arc flash PPE actually protects against, how it's selected, and where it fits in a compliant electrical safety program.

What arc flash PPE protects against

An arc flash is the sudden release of heat and light energy when electric current arcs through the air between conductors or to ground. The thermal energy released can cause severe burns in a fraction of a second, at distances that surprise people unfamiliar with the hazard. Arc-rated (AR) PPE is engineered and tested to resist ignition and limit the energy that reaches the skin for a specified incident-energy exposure — it is not the same as ordinary flame-resistant (FR) workwear, and the two terms are not interchangeable.

Why PPE is the last resort, not the first

NFPA 70E organizes protective strategy around a hierarchy of risk control methods, and PPE sits at the bottom of it — behind elimination (de-energizing), substitution, engineering controls, awareness, and administrative controls. That ordering isn't a technicality: it reflects the reality that PPE only protects the individual wearing it, only works if selected and worn correctly, and does nothing to reduce the hazard itself. A compliant electrical safety program asks "can this hazard be controlled another way first?" before it asks "what PPE do we need?"

The two PPE-selection methods

NFPA 70E recognizes two accepted approaches to determining what arc flash PPE a task requires:

What arc-rated PPE typically includes

Depending on the task and the required protection level, arc-rated PPE commonly includes some combination of: arc-rated shirts and pants or coveralls, arc-rated face shields or flash suit hoods, arc-rated balaclavas, insulated rubber gloves with leather protectors for shock protection, hard hats, safety glasses, and hearing protection. Higher incident-energy exposures generally call for higher-rated, more complete coverage.

How a category or incident-energy value becomes a PPE decision

Once a task's required protection level is known — whether from a PPE category table or a site-specific incident-energy analysis — the electrical safety program should specify exactly which garments and accessories meet or exceed that requirement, and workers should be trained to recognize and correctly don that equipment before starting the task. Mixing PPE from different manufacturers or unclear provenance can compromise the overall arc rating of an ensemble, so many programs specify complete, tested garment systems rather than individual pieces.

Care, inspection, and re-certification

Arc-rated PPE degrades with wear, washing, and exposure to contaminants, and manufacturers publish care instructions and expected service life. A program should include routine inspection for damage, proper laundering practices (harsh detergents and bleach can compromise arc-rated fabric), and a clear replacement policy when garments are damaged, contaminated, or past their rated life.

Frequently asked questions

Is arc-rated (AR) PPE the same as flame-resistant (FR) PPE?
No. FR describes general resistance to catching fire; AR specifically means the garment has been tested and rated for a specific arc flash incident-energy exposure. All AR garments are FR, but not all FR garments are AR.
What are the two methods for selecting arc flash PPE?
